One of the things I did for the Belleville's Festival of Stories was to write new web pages for each monthly character trait. Each page contains general information about the trait, a story in which the theme is about the trait, QAR questions, simple follow through activities, other stories - folk tales and true stories that deal with the theme, and a bibliography of books and websites. I have four of the web pages completed. I'd love for you to drop by and tell me what works and what you'd like to see as an educator in the classroom. Just click on the trait and the month: At the festival there were 18 regional storytellers who did the breakout sessions for over 2000 4-6th grade students. We received high marks for these 45 minute workshops. Each teller had free reign to do what they wanted. Most told a story with the theme of one of the Pillars of Character and did a short workshop. We had a wide variety of workshops. Here are some examples: Perseverance - the story of Manet and a workshop cutting pieces of paper to make a mural; Self discipline - Br'er Possum and Br'er Snake and a discussion on what could have happened if other choices had been made. There were puppet and magic workshops as well as writing workshops. It was truly a magical day. Belleville's Festival of Stories The Festival of Stories is now but just a mere memory. But what a great memory it is! The committee worked for 9 months seeing this to its Belleville debut. We received many compliments for the day of storytelling that we provided for 4-6th grades at Lindenwood University in Belleville, IL. Everyone wants it to happen again. In the evening Patricia McKissack and Syd Lieberman told stories for the adults. It was a great evening with great tellers. We hope that next year we attract an even larger audience for this event.
"You knew I was a snake.... when you put me in your pocket." The moral is "When you're walkin' down the street, mindin' your own business, don't go troublin' trouble lessen' trouble troubles...you!" However, there are other endings to this story. In one version Br'er Rabbit comes along and tricks Br'er Snake back into the hole, thereby saving possum. Challenge your students to come up with more endings. The Belleville News Democrat photographer, Derik Holtman, and reporter, Rickeena Richards, came to cover the Festival of Stories. They did a great article about the event and even videotaped me doing my "stupid human trick."
