      Summer Reading Recap

Whew! What a summer! I felt like two performers rolled into one. One day I was puppeteer/storyteller for the pre-school early elementary set and the next I was historian/storyteller for older elementary and families. See Taleypo in action.

I presented "Goin' Ape Over Super Heroes" ten times this summer. Each time I did it, it became a little easier. There is so much to think about when you are a puppeteer. I had to get to the site at least an hour ahead of time to set up and get myself composed enough to do the puppet play. AND, I told a new story to boot. It's one that I've heard a ga-zillion times but never told - Anansi Brings the Stories to the World. It's a long story for the pre-school set so I added a lot of audience participation. Each time I went for a performance I had to practice it in the car. I also put the puppet play I did on line for your use. So just click on "Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock" and you will find it on my new "Puppet Central." I had a great time this summer, but one funny incident that I just have to pass on. I was preparing for the puppet play back stage when I hear the librarian ask if she wanted me to pull some book on the Holocaust for the program. The Holocaust? I asked her why. She said, "Well, you said the program was about a Nazi." A Nazi? Then, it dawned on me  "Anansi!" We had a good laugh over that. The puppets and the sets are now stored in my basement. I hope to revive it during Black History Month. To see pictures from the Bethalto Library, just click on Pictures.

Stories 'n Stones Presents "Ishi, the Last of the Stone Age Super Heroes" went very well too - 12 times!. I found the perfect stories to complement Ishi's story. The first story was what we call a hybrid. I took a little from a story that Ishi left behind called "Ishi's Tale of Lizard," and a lot from a Lakota story called "Rabbit and the Flint Bear" and added a touch of my own to the story. I ended up calling it "Rabbit, the Arrow Maker." It was a good lead in for Larry to do his demo on flintknapping. Then, I found a fire story that was actually from the area where Ishi's tribe, the Yahi, lived. I called it. "Coyote Brings Fire to the People." There are many versions of this story. I picked the elements I liked best to retell it. The St. Louis Post Dispatch did a real nice write up about the program when we performed at Cahokia Mounds. You can read it here.

I am pleased to be telling a story for the newly resurrected Illinois Storytelling Festival. It's coming up...soon. So, try to make a day of it and travel up north to Spring Grove, IL to hear some of the best storytellers from Illinois. Here is some info with a link to the website:
