Vestiges of
June
The festival of Vestalia lasted from JUN-7 to JUN-15. It was held in
honor of the Roman Goddess of the hearth, Vesta. Married women were able to
enter the shrine of Vesta during the festival. At other times of the year,
only the vestal virgins were permitted inside.
Riverwind Meeting night is once again upon us.
Since our meeting date is among the Roman festival dates, I'm tempted to ask
everyone to show up in togas and ask Bob to prepare platters of exotic
foods and goblets of vino. After all, it looks like us "married types" are welcome! Toga or not
to go, the meeting is:
Wednesday, June13 at
Bob's Rendezvous Room.
(6:30 - dinner) Click on the name for directions. Please call Ron, if you
are a regular and will not be coming. Also call, if you are bringing an
added guest. As usual, please let Ron know if you are not coming or
have extra guests. Otherwise we may have to feed you to the lions.
RiverwinD Whirlwind Weekend
XXV
Feb. 29 - March 1-2, 2008
At the May meeting it was discussed and decided upon to ask

Barbara Freeman
and
Connie Regan-Blake to be
our workshop leaders next year. They graciously accepted our offer. Many
know that they were the wind beneath our wings when they originally
performed as "The Folktellers." Many original RWers went to a workshop they
gave in Carlyle, IL, in May of 1981. No one knew each other then, and it
wasn't until years and years later that someone asked at the meeting what
our first storytelling experience was and over half said they went to see
The Folktellers. Marilyn talked to them and they agreed to come our 25th -
Silver Jubilee!
More specifics about their workshops in coming newsletters.
Since the consensus was that the Lewis and Clark Historic Site would not
comfortably hold over 40 (our break-even point), it was also discussed and
decided to hold the event at the Collinsville Memorial Library. The site has
been secured for the first weekend in March (Feb. 29th - March 2, 2008).
May Reflections

Roses are red,
Violets are blue;
But they don't get around
Like the dandelions do.
- Slim Acres
Warren
Wyman told "I Believe" from Robert Fulghum's It Was On Fire When I
Lay Down on It. A powerful remembrance that Imagination is more
powerful than Knowledge.
Lucy
Grondahl a hapless snake that "didn't have a pit to hiss in."
Marilyn
Kinsella told The Legend of the Cedars - a Cherokee creation myth
that tells why the length of daylight changes every 24 hours..
Sharon
Thompson told "I'm Not Cute!" A story about Owl with eyes that
glow that was a veritable "hunting machine.".
Marion
Nichols told "Buffalo Games."

A swarm of bees in May
is worth a load of hay.
A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon.
A swarm of bees in July is not worth a fly.
Riverwind also discussed Tellabration. They really liked the
accommodations last year at the Collinsville Library's Blum House. Some
concern was raised over the issue of it not being handicapped accessible,
but Barbara Rhodes assured us that there is a lift at the back of the house
for wheelchairs. So, the Collinsville Memorial Library have us down for
Tellabration!

Carleton reports: No storytelling events---but lots of fun stuff
happening at the library. The Harry Potter Knight Bus tour, June 28; a
lock-in for kids age 9-12 for the Harry Potter Release July 20/21,
Harry and the Potters with front band, Draco and the Malfoys
on July 30--plus Summer Reading Club starts today--our adult SRC,
Pageturners, has been going for about a month. The adult
prize is very cool--a book bag, that would actually hold a laptop.
Plus we're starting a Read Down Your Fines program--to let
kids read away their fines.. Got to
www.slpl.org
for details.
