    Leaving September Behind

It was great to be back at Bob's! The food was super-scrumpty-delicious! But, even better...it was like old home week with many of our Riverwind members present. We pretty much filled the room.  We had a lot of business to discuss. Many of our member volunteered to tell at the various events coming up. See the individual events listed. I apologize for not taking good notes. I became interested in what everyone was doing that I didn't write down the titles of any stories. I will try to do better at the next meeting.

The St. Louis Public Library is wanting volunteers to read or tell for the fairy tale exhibit. Contact the main branch, if you are interested. Or, email Patty Carleton at pcarleton@slpl.org  They are also hiring entertainers...however, most of those positions are filled. There was a huge article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch last week about the exhibit. It sounds like a terrific event.

According to and old Chinese custom, at the main entrance of a storyteller's house there would be placed a bamboo pole carrying a tablet with the inscription:

tan jin lun gu,
xing shi liang yan

Telling about the present and contemplating the past....
good words to enlighten the world

                Dates to Remember

Riverwind Witches' Brew: October 20th at the Edwardsville Public Library. Put your best witch forward as Riverwind tells from 7-9 pm. Those who volunteered include: Roger Rose, Marion Nichols, Marilyn Kinsella, Mary Lu Bretsch, Ron Adams (?)...if anyone else wishes to "spread a little magic", please contact Marilyn Kinsella. We could use a couple of more tellers.

Spooks 'n Specters: Tuesday, October 24th at the Haynor Children's Library in Alton at 6:30 pm. We need 3 or 4 RW's to tell to five-seven year olds for one hour. *Editor is not sure of the following names, please verify at the October meeting - Lucy Grondahl (?), Marion Nichols, Marilyn Kinsella and Mary Lu Bretsch.

  • Tellabration: Saturday, November 18, 2006, at 7:30 pm. The Collinsville Memorial Library is co-sponsoring this event, but it will be held in their annex building. More on this at the October meeting. Riverwind is officially registered with NSN to sponsor this event. Remember this is an event targeted for adults. So, please choose your story "for the adult heart." The following volunteer to tell: Stephanie Rhein, Marion Nichols, Ron Adams, Marilyn Kinsella, Kathy Schottel (?), Mary Lu Bretsch, Joy McLaughlin, Lucy Grondahl (alternate). The following volunteered for the various committees. Hospitality - Stephanie Rhein and Ron Adams; Program - Marilyn Kinsella, Publicity - Stephanie Rhein. Emcee and Greeters - TBA. Riverwind asks each member to donate something for the attendance prizes and to bring a plateful of nummies (cookies, candies, etc.). President Ron spoke to the director of the library about "charging" for the event. They decided to take a free will donation at the door that will be split between RW and the food pantry in Collinsville. We will therefore forgo the tickets. In the past each member was given 10 tickets at $5.00 each. Some members graciously bought the tickets and gave them to friends. That won't happen this year. So, please bring your friends, family, housekeeper, dog-walker...anyone who likes a good story to our Tellabration!
  • First Night: December 31, 2006, at the Lewis and Clark College in Godfrey, IL. Times TBA
  • "Stories from the Heart and Home" February 4, 2007, at 2:30 pm : Union Methodist Church, Belleville for their Fine Arts Series. So, brush up on your best story - think of Valentine's Day or "home" story. Time will depend on who is telling that day. Gail Long. who comes to our RWWW. is our contact person. Here are the names of those who signed up at the September meeting: Sharon Thompson, Roger Rose, Warren Wyman, Ron Adams, Stephanie Rhein, Mary Lu, and Lucy Grondahl (?). If anyone else wishes to tell, contact Ron Adams.

Mary Garret reports for MO-TELL: Scary stories -- MO-TELL will have an evening of scary stories on October 20 (free) and a workshop on telling scary stories the morning of October 21
($40) at the Katy Depot in Frontier Park in St. Charles.  Consider this a personal invitation to anyone close enough to want to come.  I could even
recommend reasonable motels and restaurants nearby.  We are also having a Sunday workshop with Elizabeth Ellis and Loren Niemi on telling difficult
stories ($100, limited to 20 participants).  Tellers on Friday will include
Ron Adams, so scary that some adults leave the room rather than hear the story.

Tellabration: November 18, from 3-5 p.m. at Union Ave. Christian Church.
733 North Union at Enright, St. Louis, MO 63108  Tellers will be Loretta Washington, Kathy Schottel, Carol Watkins, Shaaron Peters, Dan Romano, and Ashley Grey.  The evening will be co-hosted by MO-TELL and Gateway.  In addition, MO-TELL will be organizing an auction, and donations will be
organized by and Karen Potts and  Sue Hinkel  636 271 7914 or
shinkel@mail.win.org .
