5. New Member Contest Ends May 31, 2007
Our quote for the week:

Stories are the fabric that are woven into a quilt:

that warm our hearts, that challenge our brain,

that preserve our past, that laugh at our future,

that tap our emotions, that fantasize a reality,

that we may return:

changed to wrestle the day to day.

Where would we be without stories? No telling!

8. Informal Storytelling Connection (Mentoring Update)

Since our first mention of this program in the Bulletin in March, we've had about a dozen offers from our members to mentor.  We've also added another option to the program.  If you missed the March Bulletin, below is a description of this endeavor.

We are looking for Storytellers who have been telling for a while and who feel they have knowledge to share with less experienced storytellers. There are people committing to the art form of Storytelling every day, or want to expand their experience but who are unsure of how to get started, what to do, and how to do it. You can be the bridge from the unknown into a future of Storytelling prolificacy.

There have been some additions to our original thinking about mentoring:
  •  Kevin Cordi has offered to facilitate a teleconference for those of you who are interested in being mentors.  We hope to have this in May.

  • NSN would like to unveil this connection time at the NSN conference in July, and continue the opportunity at the NSN tent during the festival in October.

  • People who desire to work with a mentor could contact me now, and people who attend the First Timers Luncheon at the conference can sign up to participate as mentees.

  • NSN is sponsoring the 30 minute connection time. Any further time is up to the mutual discretion of the participants.

  • Mentors will be contacted to better determine areas of expertise to help those seeking help pinpoint where they should begin their search for knowledge.

The seekers of help and the helpers may register their desire to participate by emailing Frankie@storynet.org

10. Member Forum - Glenda Bonin

Greetings!

Glenda Bonin who lives in Tucson has suggested that The Bulletin Forum might be a good place to discuss the answers to some questions she has received from inexperienced storytellers. As a storyteller, story teacher, performer and workshop presenter for more than twenty-five years, Glenda loves what she does! Her experience includes work with grades K through 12, college classes, library programs and community events, and her storytelling programs include puppetry, magic, theatre arts and creative writing activities.

(Faye Wooden)

Glenda says, "Telling stories is a person-to-person experience. It is a time of dreaming, wisdom and truth...an excellent and subtle teaching tool with universal appeal. I believe that teachers who add stories to enhance curriculum are the very teachers whose lessons are retained for a lifetime." Find out more about her work on the web at storyworksgroup.org
While these topics came in the form of questions from new tellers, they are important matters for all of us in the storytelling community to consider. In response to a question about whether there are storytelling do's and don'ts, Glenda stated that most do's and don'ts are determined by each teller on a personal level. Then she listed some issues which would make good topics for The Member Spotlight:
  • Respecting another storyteller's work
  • Paying attention to age-appropriate stories
  • Knowing stage performance etiquette
  • Dealing with difficult audiences
Who wants to weigh in on one of these significant issues? Do YOU have another topic to introduce?
...Waiting to hear…

11. The Fairy Duck Project
Dear Members,
I came across this art project online. The Fairy Duck Project is a project that allows artisans to create a duck and send it to children in Africa. The children to whom these will be sent to do not have toys. Its an inexpensive way for people to help children. The people in charge of this program hope to send 1,000 Fairy Duck Dolls to Africa. They will send you the patterns to make a duck!
You can find out more about the Fairy Duck Project by visiting...
