                                  Editor's Note

Dear I'll. Tellers, It has been a long, hot, dusty summer here in Southern Illinois. I'm happy to say goodbye to triple digit temps and stifling humidity. Now is the time for colorful leaves (those that withstood the draught) and cool temps (ahhh!). I hope you have your new promo material ready to send to the schools for possible bookings.

That reminds me...I'm installing a new section in the newsletter for your promo handouts (see below). So, if you'd like to put a new handout in that section, send it to markinsella19@hotmail.com via a Word doc and I will list it with the others. This is not for websites. You can list those in the Illinois Storytelling, Inc. Directory - There is a fee...but it is nominal. And, I don't want to compete with an established list.

I have also put up an "In and Around Illinois" (for lack of a better word). Since my newsletter comes out only quarterly, I miss publishing so many worthwhile I'll. Tellings. The idea is this. I will have a web page that will list a multitude of tellings around our fair state. This is where the I'll. Tell readers come into play. You must send me items for me to publish. Periodically, I will send this listed web page to the membership....OR...the readers could put this page in their "Favorites" and refresh it, when they want to see what's happening in their area or in an area where they will be visiting. I don't think you, the readers, want to know every performance someone else is doing...so, for those submitting... PLEASE make these unique performances that are open to the public and that you think other tellers would like to attend.

Although I changed the email address for this newsletter, I will keep my old address as my main address. You can email either one, but I check markinsella19 on a regular basis.

So much is going on. Grab a cupajo or green tea and enjoy the who, what and where of I'll. Tell.

          Northlands Storytelling Network

To learn more about Northlands and to become a member go to Membership.

A call will soon be forthcoming asking for CDs for the main Northland's concerts. Keep your eyes open for the dates, protocol, and deadlines and get those stories in.

I will be looking for an I'll. Teller who has never told at the main concerts to be featured in the 555 concert. One teller from each 5 states has 5 minutes in the 5 time slots. If you are interested (and never told at the main concerts) please send me your info...or if you know of someone, send me his/her info.

Next year, I will be going on the executive track. That means that there will be a new Illinois representative to fill out my turn. If you are interested in serving on the board (or know someone), please send that information to me at markinsella19@hotmail.com

The Northland's Board met in August to discuss the conference and make decisions on the workshops. It was a pleasure to read so many wonderful, deserving proposals. I don't have the list to publish, since those chosen have not been notified. There were many I'll. Tellers who were selected, but not all. It's important to remember that just since a proposal wasn't chosen this time, it does not mean that it won't be chosen in the future. (I speak from experience) The board also made decisions on grant proposals and new procedures for the conference, since it will be held at Green Lake Conference Center. It is a non-alcohol facility, and, therefore, we need to ask attendees to abide by their rules. A small price to pay for the big savings our attendees will incur. The board met at the Green Lake, and I can attest to its beauty, accessibility, and great...FOOD!

The St. Louis Conference is now a memory to behold.  It was great to see so many I'll. Tellers there to attend, perform and give workshops. Kudos to all! Next year the NSN Conference will be held in Johnson City, TN with side trips to storhoric Jonesborough. (yes, I made up that word)

               Youth I'll. Tellers

             *Note from Brian Fox Ellis:

National Youth Storytelling Showcase

As some of you may know, I am the state liaison for The National Youth Storytelling Showcase. This wonderful organization is dedicated to encouraging every classroom in America to discover (or rediscover) the beauty and value of storytelling and story performance.

They hold an annual contest in the Smokey Mountains in February, but the process of auditioning via video tape or DVD is ongoing.

Once again, it’s time to start sending in those video tapes and DVDs for the National Youth Storytelling Showcase! Two years ago we had an Illinois boy, Arthur Avery, as a top teller in the high school division! We know there is a lot of talent out there, but we need your help in rounding up the tapes and DVDs.

Please help us recruit youth tellers from your summer camp experiences, your school residencies, your classrooms and libraries!

Here are some of the logistics:

All selected tellers from local storytelling events must mail videotapes or DVD’s to me by November 3rd, 2007. (Please see addresses below). They must be in my hand by November 3rd, not postmarked by then! State Representatives will review all tapes and select the five (5) state finalists, and will send those five (5) videotapes to the Pigeon Forge Office of Special Events by Monday, November 12, 2007. Mike Lockett has agreed to help me review tapes. If you are interested we might host a tape viewing party one day that week. Drop me an e-mail, Contact Fox, if you would like to help us eat popcorn and watch the future stars of storytelling.

Videotapes must be accompanied by the required and completed entry forms or they will be disqualified. THIS IS CRUCIAL! We have had a few excellent tapes without proper paperwork which I jumped through hurdles to get and alas, it wasn’t enough. Here are the forms: National Youth Storytelling Showcase Forms

Finalists will be notified either by telephone or email from Pigeon Forge before 5 p.m. on Friday, December 7th, 2007. Finalists will receive an invitation to present their story during the Smoky Mountains Storytelling Festival during the National Youth Storytelling Showcase on February 7 – 9, 2008 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The “Grand Torchbearer” will be selected from among the performing finalists.

Use VHS tape or digital in a format that will play on a standard home DVD player. Make sure their name is clearly marked on the videotape or disk. There should be only one story on each tape or CD. Videotapes and DVD’s may be returned only if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped mailer.

If sending via US Postal Service: Brian “Fox” Ellis Fox Tales International P.O. Box 10800 Peoria, IL 61612 Attn: NYSS Entry

If sending via UPS, FedEx, etc: Brian “Fox” Ellis Fox Tales International 9121 N. Industrial Drive Peoria, IL 61615 Attn: NYSS Entry

Thanks in advance for spreading the word, encouraging youth tellers and doing your part to give a leg up to the next generation of storytellers!

From Anne Shimojima

I had the good fortune to meet Jeff Gere in St. Louis and today he  wrote to me to ask about any story radio shows here in Illinois. He  has a radio show in Hawaii. I don't know of any and wonder if any of  you do. Here is his note:
_______________________

I have a question, and ask for some help. Who is doing story radio  shows in your area, and can you help me contact them (give me email  or website or phone).

We storytellers need to set up a network of shows and I really take  to heart what was proposed in the opening of the Conference by Ron  Turner: I want to work toward a national storytelling radio show  (first identify and create a national quilt of them). I want to do  that, and want to ask you to help me identify the Illinois patch.

So thanks for the card, the tales, and be in touch.
We can get lots bigger- Thanks so very much for whatever help you can  give.

Stage Left’s  Spoken Word Cafe         Michael Cotter of Austin, Minnesota will return for his third appearance at 7:30 this Friday, August 24th. Still farming with his son’s family on their fourth generation Minnesota farm, Michael’s grandfather first broke the prairie sod in 1876. His earliest memories are of spending frosty winter days in the huge, warm barn where the baby calves running down the alleys were his responsibility as well as his playmates. In his own words: “That farm and the animals and the people there were the only world I knew, and it seems magical that recalling these memories would carry me across the nations as a storyteller.”

Michael has been honored by the Smithsonian Institute’s folk life festival, and storytelling and agricultural festivals across the country, including multiple appearances at the National Storytelling Festival and the Illinois Storytelling Festival. His storytelling was featured in a documentary examining the healing effects of storytelling for seriously ill patients. He has also had his own 50,000 watt radio show broadcast out of Des Moines, Iowa.

I believe Michael to be one of the most unique voices in the world of storytelling. His true life experience stories about farm and small town life has the depth and humor of the best Midwestern literature.  He knows Austin, Minnesota like Faulkner knew Oxford, Mississippi.

“Don't Just Do Something; Stand There! Movement and Stillness in Storytelling,”           a workshop by Milbre Burch

Whether we use movement consciously or unconsciously, the audience gets much of the meaning of our words from our facial and gestural cues. The deliberate, organic use of gesture can enhance spoken word performances when used economically. So can stillness and silence. Participants will view excerpts of videotaped performances by modern dance great Doris Humphrey, mime virtuosos Meli Kaye and Tony Montanaro, and a selection of kinetic storytellery. Then through warm-ups and floor crosses, improvisational techniques and theatre games they will work to expand their personal movement vocabulary so they can begin to claim the space fully when telling onstage.
This hands-on workshop is appropriate for public speakers, storytellers, actors, mimes, dancers, and others who are interested in knowing what their bodies are telling an audience while their lips are telling a story.

Quotes courtesy of Jackie Baldwin's Story_Lover's site

As many of you know, our good friend and fellow I'll. Teller, Leanne Johnson, passed away on August 24, 2007. She was elegance with a wry twist. Her passion for performance was only surpassed by her passion for chocolate. So, let's take a piece of chocolate and savor the memories. If you would like to write a memory down, I will pass it along to the family.

This is the online journal Leanne began and Sue Black is now taking care of it for her, posting updated information. Here is the link:
