                     Editor's Note

Our holiday's past are now the seeds for our stories to come. Many events happened around our state that were too late for the last newsletter. I hope everyone has the Illinois Storytelling, Inc Calendar in their favorites to keep up to date with all the storytelling that is going on around the state.

Many storytellers and guilds took part in Tellabrations, First Night Celebrations, and special events at The StoryBistro and the Celtic Knot. More events are planned for the beginning of 2006 and into Spring.

I reported last in the last newsletter that the gas allowance was up. Well, with gas prices falling so did the allowance. Be sure to check with your tax person to get the correct amount.

August 13 - Spring Grove
Illinois Storytelling Festival

Have you been remembering the fun you had at the Illinois Storytelling Festival last August? Over 500 story lovers came; we hope you were one of them. And guess what? We'll be back! Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 13, 2006. Once again we'll partner with the Spring Grove Firefighters to put on a one-tent (maybe two) event. Save the date and spread the word -- it's sure to be a day of good company and great stories!

Tellabrations were held throughout the state.  I received the following letter from I'll teller, Mark Kater. It sounds like they had a good turn out for their event plus lots of good stories:

Hi Story Lovers,

I want to wish you all a joyous Thanksgiving. I know my family has much to be thankful for this year.
I want to thank those of you who could attend this years Tellabration event at the Nature Center. It was a wonderful success.
This year I decided to let the audiences vote on where to donate the proceeds. The American Red Cross received 19%; Children's Memorial Hospital received 26% and The Tree House Animal Foundation Received a whopping 55% of the vote. So, The Nature Center Story Guild will be sending them a check for $252.14. (The 14 cents was donated by a little girl about four years old.)
We were fortunate to have youth tellers for the family program this year. The 4:30 show tellers included myself and Nature Center volunteer Danny Kafka and youth tellers Owen Hall age 7, Grace Bologna age 8 and Jillian Lepek age 8.
Owen created a story he called Turtle and Wolf. Owen acted the story out using puppets, while his mother, Claudia, told the story. Grace invented a story about a princess and toad. Would you kiss a toad? and Jillian read a story she wrote about the Veggie People whole live in the refrigerator.
The Adult program included tellers Zane Chait, Vicki Elberfeld, Danny Kafka and Myself. The audience was roaring with approval and by the comments I heard afterwards left with smiles and warm feelings.

          Celebration of Story and Song

From Linda Gorham:

The press release is attached, (Click HERE) but here are the details in a nutshell.  On Feb 26 Mama Edie, Oba William King and I will do a love story concert to benefit a young mother who is comatose.  It will be held at the New Life Christian Ministries of Greater Chicago, 8201 South Jeffery Blvd. in Chicago.  Her expenses are incredible and the burden on her husband unimaginable.  She's lucky to have such a good friend in Lolita Cusic who has worked tirelessly to raise money.

                    Scam Alert

On the Storytell Listserve, there were several storytellers (including myself) who received a rather peculiar e-mail form a Mr. Oblenko. He claims to be from England and will touring the US. He is looking for a storyteller to fill some storytelling jobs while here. It looks real phony - so, proceed with care, if you should receive one. Also there is another scam afoot - someone writes to you and asks for your autographed picture. This is not a good idea. Now this person has your photo and your signature. Take care out there. Marilyn
